About NatWest
NatWest (National Westminster Bank) is one of the major UK retail banks, part of NatWest Group. It serves over 19 million customers. NatWest PDF statements list transactions by date with payment type codes, descriptions, debits, credits, and a running balance column.
Pro tip — How to download your statements
In NatWest Online Banking, go to Statements & Documents. NatWest provides up to 7 years of statements. Their format with payment type codes (DD, SO, FPO) is cleanly parsed by our converter.
NatWest statement format
Here's what a NatWest PDF statement looks like and what matters for extraction.
- Columns
- Date Type Description Paid out Paid in Balance
- Date format
- DD/MM/YYYY
- Decimal separator
- period (1,234.56)
- Running balance
- Yes
- Multi-line labels
- Yes
NatWest PDF statements include a 'Type' column with payment codes — DD (Direct Debit), SO (Standing Order), FPO (faster payment out), FPI (faster payment in), POS or C/L for card purchases, ATM, BAC for Bacs, TFR for transfers and so on — followed by the Description, then 'Paid out', 'Paid in' and a running Balance. The description frequently spans more than one line and the balance is shown per transaction row.

Extraction pitfalls to watch
Format quirks to know before converting a NatWest statement.
- Payment type codes (DD, SO, FPO, FPI, POS, ATM, BAC, TFR) live in their own 'Type' column and must be matched to the right transaction line rather than merged into the description.
- FPI and FPO look similar but mean money in versus money out, so combining 'Paid in' and 'Paid out' carelessly can reverse a payment's sign.
- Descriptions wrap across multiple lines, which a basic parser splits into separate, incomplete rows.
- When downloading up to 7 years of history, overlapping date ranges across separate PDFs can create duplicate transactions if the same window is converted twice.

In the NatWest 'Type' column, DD is a Direct Debit, SO a Standing Order, FPO a faster payment sent, FPI a faster payment received, POS or C/L a card purchase, ATM a cash withdrawal, BAC a Bacs payment and TFR a transfer. The converter keeps the type code with each row so you can sort, filter or categorise by payment method in your spreadsheet.
NatWest Online Banking keeps your statements for up to 7 years. You can download any of those periods as a PDF and convert each to CSV or Excel, which helps with multi-year bookkeeping, a tax record request or a lender that wants several months of statement history.
NatWest prints long merchant or reference details over two or three lines beneath the date. A simple copy-paste treats each line as a new transaction. A dedicated converter detects the continuation lines and rejoins them so each transaction is one clean row with a single date, amount and balance.
